IMPORTANCE OF A FIRM FOUNDATION

Foundation is the lowest load- bearing part of a building, typically below the ground level. Having said that you will agree with me foundation is the most important part in any building either in a residential building or a commercial one.

when you think of building a house its advisable to think careful of how your foundation will be, make sure to involve a professional with experience to advice you  on the type  of foundation to use on the house you are planning to build.  There are factors that determine the  type of foundation to be used in any area, these are;

1.adequate depth

2.Adequate strength

3.Soil bearing capacity

4.Ease of construction

5.Type of soil

6.Water table level 

-The main purpose of any foundation is to hold the structure above it and to keep it upright. On the contrary a poorly constructed foundation can be dangerous to the occupants  and the neighbourhood  at large.

Foundation of any house you will ever come across with plays three major roles;

1.it supports the load of the entire building

2.when building a foundation it should be built in a way, it will keep the ground moisture  from seeping in and weakening the structure.

3.The last one but not the least a strong foundation keeps the building standing while the forces of nature  cause havoc,

 A well built foundation can keep the occupants safe during calamities such as earthquakes, strong winds, floods just to name but a few.


Foundations must be able to withstand 'dead' loads and 'live' loads. Dead load in a building is the weight of the basic structure itself while 'live' load is the weight of the occupants and other objects they come with. A firm foundation must be able to channel the weight of both ' Dead' and 'live' loads to the ground.


-The key of a strong foundation is relentless attention to detail.

Black cotton soil is mostly found in the central and western parts of kenya.  Black  cotton soil is favorable  for producing cotton plant. It is also referred to as expansive soil because it tends to expand when wet  and shrinks during dry period. its good to understand that not all black soil expand and not soil that expand is black Building a foundation on black cotton soil is too risky and caution should be taken before any work commences.
